Dr. Lauri Young grew up in central Ohio and even though she has lived in New York City for a very long time, her heart remains in the rural beauty of the rolling hills of the Buckeye State. As an accomplished pianist she earned a B.M. at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, a M.M. at the University of Louisville and a D.M.A. from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She moved to New York in 1990 and pursued a free lance career as recital soloist, chamber musician and accompanist throughout the tri-state area. By 1993, she was moving into a full time career as musical director in the theatre. After several years of touring and regional work, she was hired as the resident musical director for Wagner College where she has helped to produce too many shows to count. As musical director, she has been honored to collaborate with many wonderful artists: Christopher Catt, Drew Scott Harris, Norb Joerder, Richard Adler, John Carrafa, Andrew Glant-Linden, Ann Nieman, Greg Wiggans, Ray Roderick and Michele Pawk to name a few.
Her regional credits include: Renaissance Theatre (Sylvia McNair, soloist), Surflight Theatre, Harbor Lights Theatre, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Sundog Theatre, Ontological Theatre, Papermill Theatre, Ohio Light Opera, Columbus Opera, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Lincoln Center Director’s Forum, Merkin Concert Hall, Weill Recital Hall. Dr. Young has also written and arranged scores of original musical revues presented at the Metropolitan Room, Don’t Tell Mama, the Duplex, Danny’s Skylight Room, Judy’s and Lorenzo’s.
Dr. Young has been on the faculty of the Governor’s School for the Arts, Walnut Hill Performing Arts School, Third Street Music Settlement School, Turtle Bay Music School and Lee Strasberg Acting Institute.
Dr. Young teaches Musical Theatre Performance I and II, Musical Theatre History and Musicianship for Actors I and II. She finds great joy in seeing her students accomplish things that they did not think were possible. Teaching in the arts is a sacred profession by which we can help human beings honor their own unique creative impulses. The most important journey is the one we take within.
In her ample free time, Dr. Young is a competitive triathlete and writer of short fiction.
