WAGNER COLLEGE THEATRE ON BROADWAY’S BIGGEST NIGHT

It is with an abundance of pride that Wagner College Theatre congratulates the many Alumni who were involved in the shows being recognized during the 2024 theatre award season.

The 77th Tony Awards were held on Sunday, June 16th at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center. It has been a crowded and star-studded theatre season and Wagner College Theatre was well represented among the nominees and winners.

THE OUTSIDERS

The Waggies involved in The Outsiders include Viraj Shirwardhankar (company management), Korey Sanders (Assistant Props), and of course, Emma Pittman starring as Cherry Valance. The show was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design of  a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Book of a Musical, and walked away as the Winner of Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and Best Lighting Design of a Musical.

CABARET AT THE KIT KAT CLUB

Preparations for this production included an extensive renovation of the August Wilson Theatre. Part of the transformation team was Rozzie Heeger, Deputy General Manager at ATG Entertainment and Wagner College Theatre Alumna. Ray Wetmore and JR Goodman also had a hand in this production. Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

ILLINOISE

Not long after closing Spamalot on Broadway, Emmy Steele moved to Illinoise as Assistant Company Manager. Illinois was nominated for Best Musical, Best Lighting Design, Best Orchestrations, and was the Winner for Best Choreography.

THE WHO’S TOMMY

Claire Manning was part of the company management for The Who’s Tommy, which was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS

Wagner Alumni Ray Wetmore and JR Goodman bring this production to life with their incredible puppetry. Water for Elephants was nominated for Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Musical, and Best Book of a Musical. Also for Water for Elephants, Wetmore and Goodman won the 2024 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Puppetry

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

Aidan McDermott was the Assistant Company Manager of An Enemy of the People which was nominated for Best Revival of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, Best Scenic Design in a Play, Best Costume Design of  Play, and was the Winner of Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play.

Other notables include Amy Hilner Larsen, as featured in the Tony Awards program for making her Broadway debut this season in Once Upon a One More Time. Also Tony eligible this year was Spamalot which, as mentioned, included Emmy Steele in a company management position, and Tyler Roberts as part of the ensemble. Two of this year’s other heavily nominated productions, Hell’s Kitchen and Suffs, both spent time at The Public Theater, where recent WCT graduate Seth Jolles works as their Senior Digital Manager. Finally, while it may be a little late, we want to congratulate Brendan McCann on his 2023 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical for his work on Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical.
