Baritone ANTHONY TURNER has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe in solo recitals, concerts, operas, and musicals.
Mr. Turner’s operatic and musical theatre roles include Guglielmo in CosÌ fan tutte, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus, Dappertutto in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Schaunard in La Bohème, Clarence Thomas in Clarence and Anita, Josh Gibson in The Summer King, William Henry in Harriet Tubman, Tony Esposito in The Most Happy Fella, and Harry Easter in Street Scene.
He has sung with the Cincinnati and Cleveland Operas, Opera Ebony, Opera Exposures, and American Opera Projects. Mr. Turner is an exponent of the classical art song tradition of music by black and minority composers and includes this repertoire consistently in his concert appearances.
His orchestra appearances include the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lincoln Chamber Orchestra, the Omaha Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphony, the Walla Walla Symphony, the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, and the Richmond County Orchestra.
Mr. Turner has worked with the conductors Jesus Lopéz-Cobos, David Stern, Giovanni Reggioli, Henry Janiec, Robert Moody, Steven Osgood, Bruce Hangen, Lt. Col. Craig Jessup, and Ted Hearne.
He has joined forces with such distinguished artists as Laurie Anderson in ‘Songs and Stories from Moby Dick,’ Jessye Norman as a featured soloist in a benefit concert for the healing of AIDS, directed by George C. Wolfe, presented by The Balm in Gilead Inc., Kathleen Battle in ‘Kathleen Battle: Underground Railroad – A Spiritual Journey,’ and featured guest on the PBS special GREAT PERFORMANCES series Aida’s Brothers and Sisters: Black Voices in Opera. He has also appeared as a featured soloist with the Dance Theatre of Harlem in ‘St. Louis Woman,’ Four Season’s Arts, Inc., Boston Musica Viva, the United States Army Band, the Reno Choral Society, and Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble.
Mr. Turner has collaborated with the composers Mary Carol Warwick, Ben Yarmolinsky, Daniel Sonnenberg, Leo Edwards, Dorothy Rudd-Moore, and Ted Hearne. Resultant works include the commissioned song cycle Who Am I? based on the poetry of incarcerated youth from The Gathering by Jeannine Otis and as soloist in Katrina Ballads, set to texts from interviews of politicians and victims of Hurricane Katrina. He has appeared at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Opera Theatre di Lucca, Next Wave Festival, Barbican Music Festival, National Portrait Gallery, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Mr. Turner holds degrees in Music Performance from Simpson College (Bachelor of Music) and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (Master of Music). He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, American Guild of Musical Artists, Opera Ebony, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is a life member of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Mr. Turner has served as Adjunct Professor of Voice at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts – New Studio on Broadway and is currently Adjunct Professor of Voice at Wagner College.
