Second Degree Bachelor’s Students

Financial aid for second bachelor’s degree students is somewhat more limited than those pursuing a first bachelor’s degree.  The aid options below are available to those pursuing a second bachelor’s degree:

Community Health Discount

A 15% tuition discount is available to employees of Staten Island University Hospital who matriculate at Wagner College on a full-time or part-time basis.  SIUH employees must provide proof of employment.  Discounts will be applied only from the time that the proof is provided fot that current academic year and going forward.  Discounts will not be provided for academic years attended prior to the receipt of proof of empoyment. Recipients of the Community Health Discount are prohibited from receiving any other type of institutional aid including the nursing discount below.

Nursing Discount (nursing students only)

Wagner offers a 10% tuition discount to those students enrolled in the accelerated 15 month nursing program.  The discount is applied on a semester basis and is based on your tuition charge for that time period. Those receiving this discount may not simultaneously receive any other institutional aid or assistantship form the College.

Alumni Fellowship for Second Degree Nursing Students (2023-2024 only)

The Alumni Fellowship for Second Degree Nursing Students is for students who started the second degree nursing program in Fall 2023 and have previously completed a degree at Wagner College.  This 25% discount is applicable to a student's tuition on a semester basis for required courses.  Those receiving this discount may not simultaneously receive any other institutional aid or assistantship form the College.

NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

TAP is available only to NYS residents who are attending full-time and have not exhausted their TAP eligibility during their first undergraduate degree.  For additional information and to apply, please visit the HESC website.

Direct Subsidized & Unsubsidized Loans

Many students who have borrowed Direct Loans toward their first bachelor's degree may have limited borrowing remaining for their second bachelor's degree.  We encourage you to review your federal Direct Loan borrowing history at nslds.ed.gov.

Maximum aggregate (total) borrowing for any undergraduate degree is $31,000 for dependent undergraduates and $57,500 for independent undergraduates.  No more than $23,000 may be borrowed in subsidized loans no matter dependency status.    (Note: dependency status is based upon many factors and determined according to questions answered on your FAFSA.)

A FAFSA must be completed in order to be considered for Direct Loans.  In addition, a Master Promissory Note and Undergraduate Entrance Counseling must be completed at studentaid.gov.

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan

Some parents of second degree bachelor's students may qualify to borrow a PLUS Loan.  The student must be considered dependent for federal aid purposes as determined by the FAFSA.  In addition, a Direct PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN) and application (credit check) must be completed at studentaid.gov by the parent borrower to determine credit eligibility.   Additional information about PLUS may be found here.

Nursing Student Loan (nursing students only)

Nursing loans are for nursing students only.  Limited funds are available and are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.   Additional information may be found on our Nursing Student Loan page.

Alternative/private educational loans

An alternative loan may be needed in order for you to complete the financing of your second bachelor's degree.  You are strongly encouraged to exhaust all Federal Direct Loan options before utilizing an alternative loan.

We are unable to recommend any alternative loan lenders, but suggest that you evaluate each one you are considering carefully and choose the one that is best suited for your needs.   Most loans will require the student-borrower to have a credit-worthy co-signer.
